Paige's process- New York yankees vs. atlanta braves
Paige Grider

In this series, I will take you through my thought processes and camera settings and the equipment I used to take my top photos from the various events of the BSU Spring Training trip.

Taking in the Game

Camera Settings:
Camera: Canon EOS 60D
Lens: Canon 70-200 mm, f/2.8L IS II USM
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO: 3200
Shutter: 1/8000

Thoughts:
I took this picture shortly after walking into the Yankees game. A young boy came down to the rail on the main walkway to watch the game. I thought this presented the perfect opportunity to show the crowd and the game in the same frame. I positioned the boy in my frame so that the action on the field would lead to him.

Lessons From the Bullpen

Camera Settings:
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Lens: Sigma 150-600 mm f/5- f/6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 5000
Shutter: 1/8000

Thoughts:
After I walked into George M. Steinbrenner Field I was by the Yankees’ bullpen. I stayed there for a little while because I had easy access to it and I hoped to get a feature shot. Not long after stopping at the bullpen left-handed pitcher, J.A. Happ, started warming up. While he was working bullpen coach, Mike Harkey, came over to talk to him. At first the conversation was pretty static but then Harkey started using his hands to get his point across. Sometimes in order to get the picture you want you have to play the waiting game. The hand motions helped to get across what Harkey is saying to Happ since we can’t hear him. Happ’s body language also communicates meaning. His stance and head direction and open month give off the air of “Now what are you going to tell me?”.

Waiting for the Call

Camera Settings:

Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 12800

Thoughts:
Finding a place to stand at George M. Steinbrenner Field was very difficult. I didn’t want to be in anyone’s way but I still needed to find good angles and get photos. This led me to walking all over the stadium in search for a spot. I parked myself at the foul pole on the third baseline. I originally stopped there to take photos of batting but I noticed Braves players sitting in their bullpen. I like the symmetry in the chalk line and the bullpen fence. The fact that everything is in pairs also draws me to this photo.

Soaking it in

Camera Settings:
Camera: Canon EOS 60D

Aperture: f/4.5

Thoughts:
As I was leaving George M. Steinbrenner Field I kept my eyes open for possible photos. When I got to the first base side of the field a couple was just sitting in their seats talking as the stadium cleared out. I stepped back to the far side of the walkway so that I would be out of people’s way as they were leaving. Once there was a gap in the traffic I snapped this photo. When I first saw the couple I didn’t notice the New York Yankees on the top of the dugout but thankfully I eventually did. The dugout is what makes the photo.
