Paige's process- Ball State baseball vs. Butler university
Paige Grider

In this series, I will take you through my thought processes and camera settings and the equipment I used to take my top photos from the various events of the BSU Spring Training trip.
Picture
Pregame Snooze

Camera Settings:
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Lens: Sigma 150-600 mm f/5- f/6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 1250
Shutter: 1/8000

Thoughts:
For every sporting event I cover I try to get there at least 15 minutes ahead of time so I can unpack my gear and have my mind ready to shoot by game time. As I was standing along the first baseline fence waiting for the game to start Butler, junior shortstop, Zach Jarosz, laid down in front of Butler’s dugout and put his hat over his eyes. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a photo because how often do you see someone lay down at a baseball game. Getting to games early pays off because if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have gotten this photo. It lets you take feature shots before the game so you aren’t missing so much action during the game.

Dropping the Ball

Camera Settings:
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Lens: Sigma 150-600 mm f/5- f/6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 2500
Shutter: 1/8000

Thoughts:
To get this photo I was standing on the first baseline just down from first. With a runner on first I decided to have my camera focused on Ball State, junior shortstop, Noah Powell,  incase Butler’s runner, sophomore left fielder, James Gargano, tried to steal second. Sure enough, not long after that Gargano stole second base. During the attempted pickoff Powell dropped the ball and fell to the ground. When covering baseball it is really important to know where the ball is going to go next.

Sliding in Safe

Lens: Sigma 150-600 mm f/5- f/6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 2000

Thoughts:
For this photo I was tracking Ball State’s runner, senior third baseman, William Baker. I got lucky when Baker turned his body towards me instead of sliding with his back towards me. Butler’s junior shortstop, Zach Jarosz, lunged to get the ball but miscalculated his timing and ended up past the ball.

Giggle Fit

Thoughts:
For this photo I was standing at the top of the stairs at the very far end of the bleachers on the third base side. I noticed a mom walk down the stairs with her daughter. Shortly after, I heard giggles. I looked to my left and the mom was carrying her daughter bridal style and would occasionally lift her up to give her “raspberries” on her stomach. This photo was after one of the “raspberries” and the daughter was giggling. I was lucky that the daughter’s head was on the left because the sun was hitting on that side. It was a nice added touch that the mom’s shirt said alumni on the back.

Closing Out the Game

Camera Settings:
Camera: Canon EOS 7D Mark II
Lens: Sigma 150-600 mm f/5- f/6.3 DG OS HSM Contemporary
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/8000

Thoughts:
For this photo I was standing in between the bleachers and the wall around the diamond. I was just to the left of home plate. My goal when taking pitching photos is to find a way to make them unique. Pitching is such a big part of the game of baseball but the photos aren’t always the most exciting. I decided to go with this photo out of all the frames I got of Ball State sophomore, right-handed pitcher, Kyle Nicolas, because you can only see one eye. It makes it different. If I had moved a little to the right or left of where I was standing the photo wouldn’t work. When taking baseball photos a lot of it has to do with where you position yourself in relation to the field.
